Canning Town- Three towers evacuated over “serious structural problems”

More than 200 flats have been evacuated after “serious structural problems” were discovered across three tower blocks in Canning Town, east London.

The emergency evacuation of 211 flats happened on Friday night after a warning from the London Fire Brigade.

Letters sent to residents highlight issues with the transfer slab which “could result in a collapse.”

A thorough structural investigation is now underway into the buildings which were completed in 2017 for a joint venture between Cathedral Group and Galliard Homes.

Newham Deputy Mayor Cllr John Gray,  Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “We were informed by London Fire Brigade (LFB) that Sovereign Tower, Centurion Tower and St Vincent Court, Canning Town, are facing serious structural problems in the buildings, reported directly from the property management company.

“Around 211 private households were requested to be evacuated by the property management company alongside the LFB and Council officers in the early hours of the morning.

“The Council immediately set up a rest centre and provided emergency accommodation and support for residents without alternative accommodation for the night.

“The council is working with the property management company for the buildings, as well as emergency services, to minimise risk to members of the public.”
